Freqently Asked Questions
To qualify, you must be a man of 18 years or older, and be of good character, and believe in a supreme being, although your particular faith does not matter.
Only men aged over 18 are allowed to join the United Grand Lodge of England. The two leading women’s Grand Lodges that U.G.L.E. has the closest relationship with, are Freemasonry for Women (HFAF) and the Order of Women Freemasons. These two groups only admit women because that is the choice of their memberships.
New members must swear an oath (on the sacred book of their own faith) to uphold the law of our country, at all times. We will also expect you to attend most lodge meetings (these are held once per month) and to pay an annual subscription, which goes toward the upkeep of the building and the expenses of the lodge.
Members are expected to be able to affirm a belief in a ‘supreme being’. This is deliberately phrased so as to be fully inclusive and we celebrate the diverse nature of the beliefs of our members. There is no requirement to be an active practitioner of any particular religion.
Although belief in a supreme being is a requirement for joining, we do not discriminate on the grounds of religion, ethnic group, sexuality, economic or social standing.
Annual membership costs approximately £200. There is also an initiation fee, as well as the costs of regalia. You should also expect to spend approximately £15 on each dining fee.
Costs will be explored as part of any application, and fees will be invoiced and agreed before joining.
